Day 1 - Arrive in México City
Head to your local airport for your flight(s) to México City. Day 2 - Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
This morning, after breakfast, you’ll go through the Plaza of the Three Cultures to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who is the Patroness of the Americas. The plaza symbolizes the blend of the three cultures/periods in Mexican history: pre-Columbian, Spanish colonial, and the independent nation. While in the plaza, you’ll get to visit the Church of Santiago Tlatelolco, the Church where St. Juan Diego was baptized. Afterwards, you’ll continue to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was built in response to Our Lady’s request to St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. At the Shrine, you’ll have Mass as well as time to take in the magnificence of the Basilica and pray before St. Juan’s Tilma. Lunch will be provided. This afternoon and evening will be free for you to revisit the Shrine, relax, shop, and have dinner on your own. Overnight in México City.
Day 3 - Plaza de Santo Domingo – Metropolitan Cathedral – National Palace – Chapel of San Jose del Altillo – Holy Family Church
After breakfast, you’ll head to the Plaza de Santo Domingo to visit the Church of Santo Domingo, which was built by the Dominicans in A.D. 1576. It contains the tomb of Francisco Vazquez de Coronado as well as multiple chapels, including the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Shrine of Our Lady of Covadonga (Patroness of the Asturian immigrants). Afterwards, you’ll get to tour the Metropolitan Cathedral, the oldest and largest Cathedral in Latin America. Then, you’ll cross the street to the National Palace to view some magnificent murals by Diego Rivera.
You’ll have lunch and then visit the Church of San Jose del Altillo to see the crypt of Blessed Conchita Cabrera. Blessed Conchita was born Maria Concepcion Cabrera Arias de Armida and is a model of holiness through her roles as a wife and mother. She was also a writer and founded several apostolates under “Works of the Cross”. She was declared a Venerable by Saint Pope John Paul II on December 20, A.D. 1999; had a miracle confirmed by Pope Francis on June 8, A.D. 2018; and was beatified in Mexico City on May 4, A.D. 2019 making her the first Mexican laywoman to be beatified.
On the way back to the hotel, you’ll make a stop at Holy Family Church. Here, you’ll have Mass and get the opportunity to venerate the relics and tomb of Fr. Miguel Agustin Pro, a Jesuit martyr. He was exiled from Mexico during the Mexican Revolution but returned to his ministry in hiding. When he was eventually discovered, he was arrested and killed. His last words before being killed were “Viva Cristo Rey!” There will also be time to visit the small, inspiring museum in honor of the life of Father Pro. Return to the hotel for dinner on your own and overnight.
Day 4 - Puebla de los Angeles
Today, you’ll get to explore outside of México City. After breakfast, you’ll depart for México’s most beautiful city – Puebla de los Angeles, climbing over 10,000 feet above sea level. During the drive, you’ll see two peaks: a mountain with a snow cap and an active volcano. Upon arrival, you’ll visit the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the Church of Saint Dominic, which includes the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary was built in A.D. 1690 and is a beautiful example of Mexican Baroque with gilded stucco, onyx stonework, paintings, and 22-carat gold leafed tiles. After this visit, you’ll head to a local restaurant for a traditional lunch.
In the afternoon, you’ll visit the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi to view the incorrupt body of Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio, the patron Saint of travelers. Blessed Sebastian was born in a peasant family and was a field worker, accumulating a lot of wealth. At the age of 72, he gave his belongings to the poor and became a Franciscan friar, earning the name “Angel of Mexico”. Return to the hotel in México City for some free time, dinner on your own, and overnight.
Day 5 - Tulpetlac – San Juan Teotihuacan
This morning, after breakfast, you’ll head to the Church of the Fifth Apparition in Tulpetlac for Mass. It was here that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Bernardino, St. Juan Diego’s uncle, and healed him as he was dying. In the Church, there is a well of healing water under the altar that can be accessed from a faucet located in the front right of the altar.
Then, you’ll head to San Juan Teotihuacan, which was chosen to be the center of the universe according to mythology and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
