ITINERARY: PORTUGAL – LISBON, SANTARÉM, FÁTIMA, COIMBRA, & OPORTO / SIX-DAYS

Day 1 – Wednesday-Friday departure – Depart for Lisbon

Today, you’ll head to your local airport for your overnight flight(s) to Lisbon. Dinner and breakfast will be served on board the transatlantic flight.

Day 2 – Thursday-Saturday – Lisbon

Upon arrival, you’ll go through customs, grab your bag from baggage claim, and meet your tour guide and/or driver in the Arrivals Hall. You’ll begin your pilgrimage with a tour of Lisbon that will include Saint Jerome’s Monastery, Belem Tower, 25th of April Bridge, Basilica of the Star, the Marquee of Pombal Square, and Saint Anthony’s Church. St. Anthony is the patron Saint of lost things and is known as Saint Anthony of Padua. However, he was born, baptized, and raised in Lisbon. At this Church, built on the site of his birth, you’ll have Mass, the opportunity to visit the small museum and gift shop, and see a first-class relic of St. Anthony. Dinner and overnight in Lisbon.

Day 3 – Friday-Sunday – Santarem - Fatima

Today, after breakfast, you’ll make your way to Fatima with a stop in Santarem, one of the oldest cities in Portugal, along the way.

In Santarem, you’ll get to visit the Church of Saint Stephen, where you’ll have Mass and get the opportunity to venerate a 13th century Eucharistic Miracle. In 1269, the Host was stolen by a woman for payment to a sorcerer, began to emit light and bleed, and was returned to the Church of Saint Stephen. Since then, It has continuously been on display and officially recognized. In 1997, scientific tests confirmed that the contents were human flesh and blood with the same rare AB+ blood type as 6 other Eucharistic miracles and other miracles such as the Shroud of Turin. Throughout history, many Saints have made the pilgrimage to Santarem to venerate the Host, such as Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Elizabeth, Queen of Portugal.

After lunch, you’ll continue the drive to Fatima, the home of the three shepherd children to whom the Blessed Mother appeared in 1917. Dinner, optional candlelight procession at 9:30pm, and overnight in Fatima.

Day 4 – Saturday-Monday - Fatima

Today, you’ll get to see, pray at, and meditate upon one of the Virgin Mary’s apparition sites. From May 13 to October 13, 1917, Our Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children (Lucia – age 10, Francisco – age 9, Jacinta – age 7) every month to relay the message to pray for world peace.

After breakfast, you’ll head to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary to have Mass at the Little Chapel of the Apparitions, which was built in response to and the site of Our Lady’s apparitions. While there, you’ll also be able to view the tombs of the shepherd children, the 15 altars dedicated to the 15 mysteries of the Rosary, and the monument of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the square. Next, there will be a visit to the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity to view its beautiful mosaics, including ones of Saint James the Greater and Saint Elizabeth, Queen of Portugal.

Then, there will be time for lunch before a visit to the Hamlet of Aljustrel (where the children lived) and Valinhos Sanctuary (the site of Our Mother’s appearance in August 1917). Before heading back to the hotel, you’ll get to participate in the Stations of the Cross by following the Via Sacra (“The Sacred Way”), which comprises of 15 small chapels and is the path the shepherd children took to the first apparition. Dinner, optional candlelight procession at 9:30pm, and overnight in Fatima.

Day 5 – Coimbra and Porto

To wrap up your pilgrimage throughout Portugal, you will head to Porto with a couple stops in Coimbra. After breakfast and a leisurely morning, you’ll head to the first stop – the Carmelite Convent of Saint Teresa, which was the last earthly home of Sister Lucia. You’ll have time to pray and reflect on the life of Sister Lucia. Afterwards, you’ll head to the Poor Clare’s Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova to see the incorrupt body of Saint Elizabeth, Queen of Portugal. Since 1910, this monastery has also been classified as a National Monument.

Before continuing on to Port, or Oporto, there will be time for a small lunch. Porto is a historic city known for its production of Port wine, which is still stored and matured in cellars along the riverbanks. While here, you’ll get to visit the old town, the Cathedral, and have Mass in the Church of San Francisco. Enjoy a traditional dinner tonight with a tasting of some local Port wine as you bid farewell to your pilgrimage throughout Portugal. Overnight in Porto.

Day 6 – Return Home

Today you will enjoy an early morning breakfast, followed by a transfer to Lisbon airport for your return flight(s) home.
